Why a Performance Based Breeding Program?

A serious, performance based breeding program, is really all about measurement. In the case of versatile hunting breeds, like the DK, the focus is on measurement of the natural ability, trainability and temperament characteristics necessary to maintain and improve upon the right genetic mix. The mix that makes up a quality versatile hunting dog! While perfection is only a goal that is rarely achieved, it is the outcome for which truly dedicated DK breeders strive. That goal is not something that can be accomplished by one breeding but is a continuum of contributions made by many devoted Deutsch Kurzhaar breeders over time. The intent is not to produce as many offspring as possible but to produce the best all around versatile hunting dog possible. Breeding is based on the selection of breeding candidates that consistently exhibit excellent performance as well as possess the physical attributes that make them better able to do the work required. With no ruler to measure with, choosing dogs with the right characteristics for breeding purposes is impossible.

Many well established hunting breeds throughout North America and the world exist with diminished hunting abilities. This is due to years of unrestricted breeding and no performance based measurement system to insure genetic integrity. That’s why the VCDKK only supports DK breeders that exemplify a sincere interest in the DK breed and embrace and abide by the letter and intent of the German testing and breeding system.
